Last Monday I picked grapes next door at Phyllis’ house. Almost all she had left on her vines and got over three lbs. Never having picked grapes before and never made jelly either this was a new adventure for me!
On Tuesday after the stem removal, the rinsing, and the initial cooking Jay mashed the grapes and put them in the jelly bag.
A new contraption to me but Jay had worked with it before. I kept checking the flow of the juice but it seemed like it was taking forever. Finally after the flow lessened to a solitary drip he squeezed out the last of the juice. Then back to the stove for the final cooking with sugar and fruit pectin added.
A fine taste and great color—-I guess we did it right!
That looks so yummy! I love grape jelly.
Once upon a time, a co-worker asked me if it is SAFE to make and eat jelly in a home kitchen. She wanted to know how I understand how to do it.
No doubt she was a city kid where everything came from the store’s shelf.
And she probably did not have a grandma like mine who raised 9 kids through the Great Depression, and passed on knowledge about making ends meet.
Hhrrmmph! Is it safe to eat my own cooking?!
Oh Yes, indeedy.
And Jay did a great job juicin’ down those grapes, cuz that is clear as glass. County fair material, even.
Okay so now I’m drooling, its 12:22 am and I’m looking for the peanut butter!!
Alas the Mrs. says it is too late to eat so I can only imagine the succulent taste of your fresh made grape jelly as it wiggles its way down to my longing tummy!! Yummmm – mieeee!!
Hmm I guess Welch’s will have to do!!
that’s good stuff! I did have to get a peanut butter sandwich
How wonderful! What I wouldn’t do for a warm piece of toast spread with some of that delicious grape jelly. And what a lucky woman you are to have a helpful husband…..but you already know and count him among your blessings.
