Sweet thing and David were up Saturday to take the mower deck off the tractor and put the snow plow on. A rousing pinochle game with the woman losing developed and a pork loin dinner was consumed. Jay loves having the family up so he can cook something special for them.
A moment during the visit that sticks in my mind was when my daughter requested that I hug her tight and she whispered in my ear that the Mommy smell was what she sensed sometimes. She said she thought to herself “Gee I smell just like my mommy”! What a warm and comforting thing to say. What an inner smile develops each time I think of it.
All the thoughts of Christmas have started floating through my head. I have someone coming tomorrow to clean the sad old carpeting in the living/dining room area so I can set up the new tree. The snow has disappeared and it is a good time to string those outside lights before it returns. Getting ready to decorate involves several blue plastic boxes filled with goodies that must be hauled up from the basement and be sorted through. I love this time of year because the house take on a warm and welcoming glow that shine into all the corners, out of the windows, and beckons all to come a sit a spell!
There are still the lawn decorations to finish, cards to address and send out, and I think I’ll make cookies this year. I need to knit myself a new pair of gloves and buy some boots. Buck and Doe are waiting in the basement to start their second adventure on the lawn of the dome. Of course Doe needs to be reassembled but Buck and the sled where were stored without losing a leg or a runner! What an exciting three weeks are ahead.
As is tradition all the children will be here on Christmas Eve with their children in tow. Being together, eating a great meal, laughing, and recalling past Christmas together will be top priority.
This last year has been what the farmers call a rough row to hoe but hopefully things will get better as the new year progresses. But whatever happens we at least have each other to lean and make it through!
This is a wonderful time of the year and it sounds as though you have really caught the spirit.
The Christmas Spirit must be nice. I’ve never been one for decorating, other than a wreath on the door. But the Cookies, oh yeah, I’ve got a list for those. Though not until after Finals week will I find the energy.
I have been reading your blog for quite awhile, because I remember Buck and Doe. Time sure flies.
Are we talking peanut butter, ritz dipped in chocolate? Because I was gonna do some of them, plus the butter finger Santas and chocolate peanut butter balls! I guess I have a peanut butter theme this year!
My co-workers are already begging me for my pumpkin cookies. I hear it everyday..lol
I started baking but it will have to wait till this weekend for more i need the paycheck to start other cookies. I’m half way done with the cards, and my house inside is all decorated. Just have to do the outside. If it ever stops raining! Even the shopping is half done..geesh.
I just need 2 more of me and about 3 checks to get everything done!..lol
My grandmother used to make these Christmas cookies that were pure works of art. They were your standard Christmas shapes; Santa, Christmas Tree, etc., but she decorated them with this thick, diabetes giving surgar frosting that was just to die for. But it was the WAY she decorated them. Santa for instance had red, white, and black frosting making up his outfit, beard, and belt. They must have taken hours to create.
The woman was a true folk artist to be sure, but I guess that is something that comes with her having lived in Michigan.
My friend Pam sent me about six cookie recipes using cake mixes as a base and I’ve got extra mixes in the cupboard. So I think I’m set. Maybe Sweet Thing will exchange some with me.
If I get them made you get first pick!
